Heritage: Dowd-surname carrier in late-twentieth-century American religious life; no documented Irish ancestry in the cited Wikipedia article. Heritage classification: surname-carrier.
Michael Dowd (19 November 1958 – 7 October 2023) was an American author, ordained minister (United Church of Christ and Universal Life Church) and lecturer who became known as America’s “evolutionary evangelist” for his project of integrating evolutionary science with progressive Christianity. His best-known book, *Thank God for Evolution*, published by Council Oak Books in November 2006 and acquired the following spring by Viking Penguin, argued for what he called a marriage of science and religion within an evolutionary paradigm — presenting the 14-billion-year cosmic story as “14 billion years of grace” and arguing that an evolutionary understanding of human nature and behaviour could underwrite emotional and spiritual health. His 1991 book *EarthSpirit* launched his speaking career in religious naturalism and the epic of evolution; in his later years he articulated the concept of “post-doom” — finding the gift beyond mere acceptance that climate change would inevitably bring civilisational collapse. He died on 7 October 2023.
